Instead of using a transit and
tape measure, to position and stake corner points and
locate building lines; batter boards, string lines and a plumb bob can
be used. See figure 4. The setback stakes on the
property lines can be measured with a transit, or batter boards can be
placed outside of each property line so their strings cross over
the setback stakes and each other at the building corner stakes.
Measurement errors will be reduced if the batter boards are placed
close to the property line. A large error at a
batter board will result in a small error at building line.
